At least by staying at the table the US has some influence.
Kiev knows that half way on territory is unacceptable to the Russians. That would just be showing weakness. Trump/Rubio need to hit them over the head with a large club to force them to understand that such weakness will in fact be gain. The longer they remain stubbornly ‘strong’, the more territory they will lose.
