Enjoy your new geiger counter! I remember the ‘Fiesta’ dishes. Uranium was used in the ceramic glaze coatings for yellow and orange colors. Back in the 30’s depression era there was ‘Uranium Glass’ which was a pale green color. Only slightly radioactive and stable in glass, so it wasn’t real harmful. You can find it today among antiques by shining a UV light on it and it glows brightly.
When you get your new counter, let it run in the open at your house and get a ‘background’ reading. Depending on location and the counter, this could be around 12 CPM (counts per minute). Don’t freak out if it is different. Just get a stable readout for a couple days and note that is your ‘normal’ background reading. Then if it changes or goes up significantly you know something is going on.
