Exhausted today.  Was running on nervous energy yesterday and last night, watching nonstop TV coverage of the waves arrival, waiting for damage reports that didn’t come. Tsunami Warning was downgraded to an ‘advisory’ as the wave amplitudes steadily decreased.  The ‘advisory’ was cancelled this morning around 8am local time.

Kudos to the population and emergency services keeping us informed.  Hawaii takes tsunamis very seriously, as we have had severe consequences in the past.  Amazing videos last night as the coast guard cutter left Honolulu harbor, leading a parade of boats heading for deep water.  Night time video of offshore Waikiki was like a starry constellation of boat lights on the sea.  There was a cruise boat docked in Hilo with passengers ashore.  The coast guard ordered the boat out to sea and closed the harbor, stranding 600 passengers ashore.  There are not that many hotel rooms available in Hilo, and shoreline hotels were evacuating to above the 4th floor.  They are only 7 stories high.  So most of the boat passengers ashore were left to fend for themselves overnight.  The ship went around the island to the Kona side, and in the morning a fleet of busses collected the Hilo passengers for a 100 mile ride around to the other side of the island at Kona for them to board the boat anchored offshore.

Shoreline flooding and harbors flushing out, but no serious damage reports. At Haleiwa the tsunami crest to trough was 8 or 9 feet with a period of 20 minutes, so it was slow and gentle water movement.  As the wave heights gradually diminish the authorities downgraded to advisory status.  A tsunami is not just one big wave.  It is a series of ripples… very large and long in the ocean.  And it behaves differently at different shorelines and bottom conditions, so we prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Half as far from the sun means only 44% of the sunlight (the inverse square law). Much slower plant growth.

It is a little cold – what is a little cold? What, precisely, do you want to warm up? The planet?

Its atmosphere is negligible. For practical purposes, there is no atmosphere. Yes, you can compress it 100 times to reach one earth atm, but then you have a pure CO2 atmosphere and plants die at over half a percent CO2. Oh, and you need water, and humidity (more water), and soil. There is no soil on Mars. The dirt and dust on the surface is toxic, nothing can grow there. “we can grow plants on Mars just by compressing the atmosphere” is total bull***t.

Besides revolving doors in the just us system to the kind that have nothing to lose anyway the citizens  should do what my daughter did, although I kinda put that idea in her head, who’s still having to use crutches to walk almost a year later.They should not be able to cause nearly killing someone and that much trauma and say or sorry and walk away.  The uninsured motorist in this case isn’t going to walk free. She took her to court and she agreed to pay my daughter 200 a month as shes not young but doesn’t make much or own a home. The nothing to lose can still stand to lose since this payment is going to go on for years and if they don’t pay their wages can be garnished. That was a accident.

This willful thugs should be charged much more, job or no job and follow them for the rest of their life including while in  jail or prison be made to work and pay back their debt. Lawyers don’t want these cases cuz there’s no money in it for them but they can do it. Now my daughter is looking for these people who buy their settlement so she can go buy another motorcycle. Under the circumstances I don’t think she’ll find someone to buy it thank God.

It looks to me like a big over reaction in the futures market to me where they buy big amounts on big margin, where they can make it big or lose it big. So they tend to fall all over over each other trying to all sell out at the same time. Probably the smarter futures players are buying the dip. Look at Copper.

Gold producers’ margins updated.

We’re living through what could be described as the “Golden Age of Mining”, in my view.

Yet, it’s striking to see that many mining stocks still trade as if gold were below $2,000/oz.

A significant re-rating is still on the horizon, in my opinion.
